[21|07|04] IV Meeting of Traditional Cultures of Chapada Dos Veadeiros

Every July at Chapada dos Veadeiros, in the small village of São Jorge, situated at the entrance of one of the biggest national parks in Brazil, typical dances are presented at the “Meeting of Traditional Cultures of Chapada dos Veadeiros”. The event was created to diffuse and strengthen legitimate manifestations of popular traditions such as: Catira, Congo, Curraleira, Sussa and Batuque , all of which belong to the cultural universe of the mid-western region. The meeting happens every year in the northeastern part of Goiás . It also promotes renowned musicians like Naná Vasconcelos and Hermeto Pascoal, who have already presented their music in previous years .This year, Carlos Malta and his group Pife Muderno will invade the cattle-grazing lands. All the promoted activites are free of charge and also include other activities such as .theatre workshops ,circus, mamulengo and other activities aiming at putting some movement into the “Meeting”. Debates on culture, the environment and society are also promoted with a view to stimulating discussions and thoughts.

The meeting was created due to the need of a public space for the use of the comunity where minority groups could exercise their citizenship and also get advice on how to deffend the following values: quality of life , protection of the environment and preservation of cultural references. It´s important to promote and enphasize such actions firstly becasue those cultural traditions of rural folklore are endangered and secondly because of the social exclusion factor which affects those rural comunities: they are excluded from political practises and from national cultural heritage.

Goals

  • Preserve and strenghten existing cultural traditions in the region of Chapada dos Veadeiros.
  • Give value to cultural references of the region regarding them as evidence of culture practised by its legitimate interpreters.
  • Register and map such manifestations, collecting data and images to compose a project which recognises them as non-material Brazilian Heritage.
  • Bring up the feeling of pride for those comunities for their traditions and also for the feeling of cultural belonging.
  • Diffuse the Brazilian art and turn it into a tool for reflexion.

WORKSHOPS

From its first edition on, the Meeting promotes playful and artistic workshops covering themes like paper recycling , alternatrive toys , puppets´theatre, circus acrobatics, bread baking, mask making amongst others. These workshops are given by artists and educators from Brasília and Goiânia and also by professors and local craftspeople. The goal here is to stimulate and value traditional culture promoting plesant moments for children and options of entertainemnt and learning for the local comunity and its visitors. This year, the meeting brings Chico Simões and Doroty Marques for the longer workshops which are aimed especially at the local comunity. The actor, art-educator and theatre director Chico Simões will present a play based on the legend of Saint George, patron saint of the village, “Na Caçada da Rainha” – typical popular manifestation of the region – also based on the history of the village . Doroty Marques, musician and also art-educator, will organise a play with the children of the village. Her workshop will begin 15 days before the opening of the event . The result of the work with the children will be presented on stage with the other artistic presentations. Viola player and researcher Roberto Corrêa will present his music and also give a workshop on Oral Memory for the comunity The idea intends to make regional storytelling practises stronger and more dynamic.
