RESUMO

No campo da Saúde Coletiva cunhou-se a expressão “determinação social do processo saúde-doença” para indicar a complexidade das causas, efeitos, consequências e respostas necessárias na abordagem dessa tríade. Essa expressão clama por um conceito ampliado de saúde. Entretanto, há um imaginário social em formação que restringe a saúde à busca por serviçoes sanitários e, mais deletério ainda, propaga a ideia de que ter saúde é poder comprar serviços da iniciativa privada. Este artigo quer dialogar com os leitores sob a égide da seguinte pergunta: “A ampliação do conceito de saúde é um capricho acadêmico ou uma necessidade política?”. Logo de saída, os autores respondem que tal ampliação é, sim, uma necessidade política. O desafio é que não basta explicitar essa posição, há que se produzir modos de responder a essa necessidade, entendendo que, por ser política, envolve disputas de poderes e narrativas que buscam atrair corações e mentes para suas respectivas hostes. Em outras palavras, envolve disputas de imaginários na arena pública. Mostra-se neste artigo que, apesar de existirem muitas oportunidades para a ampliaçào do conceito de saúde, a batalha vem sendo ganha pelo seu conceito restrito. Há alternativas, e aqui serão apresentadas.

triad. This expression calls for an expanded concept of health. However, there is a social imaginary that is becoming restricted to health, the search for health services, and even more deleterious, conveying the idea that having health is being able to buy services from the private sector. This article wants to dialogue with readers under the aegis of the following question: “Is the expansion of the concept of health an academic caprice or a political need?” And at the beginning, the authors reply that this expansion of the concept of health is a political necessity. But the challenge is that it is not enough to explain this position, it is necessary to produce ways of doing it, and if it is politics, there are disputes of powers and narratives that seek to attract hearts and minds to their respective hosts. In other words, there are imaginary disputes in the public arena. We will show that there are many opportunities for expanding the concept of health, but the restricted concept of health has won this battle. But there are alternatives and here we will present them.
