RESUMO

O objetivo deste artigo é descrever e refletir sobre o percurso metodológico do estudo Imagens e narrativas de uma instituição asilar e da velhice, construídas por três segmentos distintos: idosos moradores, gestores e voluntários, realizado na Faculdade de Educação da Unicamp, em Gerontologia. O estudo priorizou como recurso metodológico as fotografias do acervo oficial do Asilo São Vicente de Paulo em Atibaia-SP, para analisar como pessoas envolvidas com o universo asilar constroem a história do asilo e as suas histórias de vida a partir dos vínculos institucionais. Elaboraram-se categorias temáticas construídas pelos discursos imagéticos e, posteriormente, foram analisadas as escolhas individuais dos participantes e a escolha por segmento – moradores, gestores e voluntários –, além das narrativas produzidas dessas escolhas, assim como as imagens excluídas. Conclui-se que o planejamento metodológico embasado em fotografias permite identificar formas de pensamentos que incitam a pessoa a nomear ou excluir imagens que carregam significados pessoais de sua história de vida e estimula o sujeito a falar de informações além daquelas retratadas na imagem. O método deve ser planejado e testado em outros estudos, uma vez que se mostrou um excelente instrumento a ser utilizado quando os recursos verbais tradicionais não têm alcance.

ABSTRACT

This article aims to describe and reflect on the methodological approach of the study entitled “Images and narratives of a long-term care institution and nursing home from the perspectives of elderly residents, managers and volunteers”, conducted at the College of Gerontology Education at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP). The study placed emphasis on the use of photographs from the official collection of the São Vicente de Paulo nursing home in Atibaia (Sao Paulo) as a methodological resource to analyze how people’s involvement with the universe of nursing homes affect the nursing homes and how their lives are also affected by that involvement. The study developed thematic categories based on the image discourses and then analyzed the participants’ individual choices, the choices by segment (residents, managers and volunteers) and the narratives resulting from these choices, as well as the images that were excluded. The study concluded that the methodological approach based on photographs permits the identification of ways of thinking that encourage a person to create or exclude images that carry the personal meanings of their life stories and encourage the subject to share information beyond what is included in the images. This methodological approach should be planned and tested in other studies, since it has shown to be an excellent tool to use when traditional verbal resources are not effective.
