Resumo
Os judeus levantinos e norte-africanos, que em grande parte eram os herdeiros de uma história de cosmopolitismo e de refinamento cultural, vinculados tanto à cultura árabe quanto à cultura francesa, chegaram ao Estado de Israel a partir de 1948 como um grupo de destituídos e, no novo país, tornaram-se inteiramente dependentes de instituições de Estado, que estavam determinadas a moldá-los culturalmente à sua própria imagem. Assimilação à nova cultura, negação e renúncia da identidade anterior e revoltas infrutíferas foram formas de reação encontradas para lidar com esta circunstância crítica. Os judeus de origem norte-africana e asiática foram tratados pelo establishment cultural e ideológico israelense como uma minoria estranha aos valores fundamentais do Estado e, como tais, destinados a uma situação às margens da sociedade, considerada como uma sociedade ocidental, europeia e moderna. Neste artigo, discute-se a absorção dos imigrantes judeus oriundos do mundo islâmico, assim como a criação de uma identidade cultural alternativa no seio da sociedade israelense.

Abstract
North-African and Levantine Jews were heirs to a history of cosmopolitism and cultural refinement, having been formed both by Arab and French culture. As they began to arrive in Israel, after 1948, they were considered as a destitute group and became entirely dependent on the State’s institutions, which were determined to transform their culture according to the parameters then hegemonic in Israel. Assimilation to the patterns of socialist Zionism, negation of their former identities and fruitless rebellions were the result of this process. North-African and Levantine Jews were treated by the cultural and ideological establishment as a minority, foreign to the State’s fundamental values and thus destined to the margins of a society that saw itself as western, European and modern. This article discusses the absorption of Jewish immigrants from the Islamic world and the creation of an alternative identity within Israeli society.
