RESUMO

Este artigo discute o conceito de saúde para além da doença tomando por referência o pensamento crítico em saúde que se formulou no Brasil entre os anos de 1970 e 1980. Parte-se do pressuposto de que tais conceitos são historicamente configurados, não se dando em abstrato, e que numa sociedade como a brasileira, industrial moderna, ocidental e capita- lista, a saúde sempre teve por referência a doença. Apresenta as origens e os marcos daquele pensamento, sua configuração institucional e político-científica, para esclarecer a concepção de saúde por ele formulada e suas bases empírico-teóricas. Destacam-se as dimensões da desigualdade social, tendo por foco o direito à saúde, e a crítica ao modelo da medicina preventiva, tendo por foco a dimensão da produção social da saúde, e não da doença. Por fim, problematiza e discute esses marcos empírico-teóricos diante das profundas transformações sociais do Brasil contemporâneo.

ABSTRACT

This article discusses the concept of health in addition to disease taking as a reference the Brazilian critical thinking in health formulated during the decades of 1970 and 1980. It starts from the assumption that such con- cepts are historically configured, taking them not in abstract but conside- ring the Brazilian society context, a modern, an industrial, a western and a capitalist society, in which health has always had disease as a reference. It presents the origins and the framework of that thought and its institutional and political-scientific configuration to clarify its concept of health and its empiric and theoretical bases. Two dimensions of this critical thinking are highlighted: the right to health, based on the social inequality discussion, and the social production of health, not of the disease, criticizing the preven- tive medicine model. Finally, it discusses these empiric and theoretical fra- meworks in face of the great transformations of contemporary Brazil society.
